WHAT IS A QUINCEANERA/ QUINCEANER@?

A Quinceañera is a traditional celebration that celebrates the coming of age of a young Latina for her 15th birthday. However, we are changing it up into a Quinceñear@ in order to celebrate and honor gender non-conforming, trans, and queer fierce Latin@s in our Latin@ communities. Also, we see the Quinceñear@ as a way to deconstruct and challenge gender norms within Latin communities. At this event there will be music, a choreographed waltz, an auction, and drag.

Tonight FIST! Presents artist Cristy C. Road! This event is FREE and part of International Womyn’s Week! The Evergreen State College Lecture Hall 3, 6-8pmCristy C. Road is a Cuban American artist and author of “Bad Habit” and “Indestructible” and her most recent work; “Spit & Passion” - a graphic coming-out memoir. Road will be reading from Spit & Passion and discussing the intersections between cultural identity, queer identity, punk rock, and political activism. Her experience as an artist and writer is rooted in various communities that both clash and assist the production of her queer feminist art. The talk will be following by a Q&A segment.About Spit & Passion: At its core, “Spit and Passion” is about the transformative moment when music crashes into a stifling adolescent bedroom and saves you. Suddenly, you belong. At twelve years old, Cristy C. Road was struggling to balance tradition in a Cuban Catholic family with her newfound queer identity, and began a chronic obsession with the punk band Green Day. In this graphic biography, Road renders the clash between her rich inner world of fantasy and the numbing suburban conformity she is surrounded by. She finds solace in the closet—where she lets her deep excitement about punk rock foment, and finds in that angst and euphoria a path to self-acceptance.
